Reimagining
Play

African history is rooted in connection, hope, and resilience. African play culture is innovative and regenerative, and engages with diverse ways of interacting with the world around us.

It is something to be embraced, reclaimed and nurtured.

This playful exhibition was showcased at Nairobi Design Week 2025 and has been recreated here for you to explore 20 images that reflect past, present, and future realities of play in Africa.

The reimaginations have been generated through research examining African play heritage, individual narratives, and Artificial intelligence.

Join in and rediscover forms of play often overlooked by modernity and Western knowledge systems, and consider how we can reclaim plural worlds of play.
